About
Empress Maria Theresa commissioned the arch in 1765 for the wedding of her son Leopold, but her husband Francis Stephen died suddenly during the celebrations. As a result the south side celebrates the marriage while the north side mourns the emperor, and the arch frames the long Baroque street leading towards the mountains.
Best time to go: Stand at the arch and look north up Maria-Theresien-Straße for the classic view of the Nordkette.
