About

Văn Miếu, the Temple of Literature, was founded in 1070 under Emperor Lý Thánh Tông and dedicated to Confucius. From 1076 it housed the Imperial Academy, Vietnam's first national university, which remained here until 1779. The complex lies south of the Imperial Citadel and is laid out as a sequence of walled courtyards, pavilions and halls, with stone stelae recording the names of scholars who passed the imperial examinations.

Best time to go: Arrive at opening time for quiet courtyards, and take time over the stone stelae that honour the scholars.
