About
The Imperial Citadel of Thăng Long was begun in 1010 under Emperor Lý Thái Tổ of the Lý dynasty. Most of what stood later dates from the reconstruction ordered by Gia Long in 1805, but the French demolished much of it to make way for offices and barracks. The North Gate and the Flag Tower survive, and the grounds reveal layers of Vietnamese history in one large site.
Best time to go: Allow an unhurried hour or two, and pair it with the Temple of Literature to the south.
