About
Completed in the eighteenth century, the palace has witnessed key moments in Mexican history: here Hidalgo decreed the abolition of slavery in 1810, and Benito Juárez narrowly escaped a firing squad in 1858. Over the main stairway, José Clemente Orozco painted Hidalgo brandishing a torch above scenes of struggle.
Best time to go: Climb the main staircase to face Orozco's mural of Hidalgo head on.
