About
Founded by Bishop Juan Cruz Ruiz de Cabañas in the early nineteenth century and designed by Manuel Tolsá, the building grew around many patios as an orphanage and almshouse. In the late 1930s Orozco painted the chapel with some fifty murals culminating in the Man of Fire, and the complex is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and cultural centre.
Best time to go: Borrow one of the benches beneath the main dome and lie back to take in Orozco's Man of Fire.
