About
Work on the city hall began in the early sixteenth century in an extravagant late Gothic style, but money and politics halted it. When building resumed, the architects turned to a restrained Renaissance design, so the two faces of the building are strikingly different. The Pacification of Ghent was signed here in 1576.
Best time to go: Walk around the whole building to see how its two contrasting facades meet at the corner.
