About

Begun for the banker Luca Pitti, the palace was bought in 1549 by Eleonora di Toledo, wife of Cosimo I, and became the main residence of Tuscany's rulers. The Palatine Gallery hangs Raphaels and Titians in gilded rooms as the grand dukes displayed them. The Royal Apartments, the Gallery of Modern Art and the Museum of Costume and Fashion are all in the same building.

Best time to go: Weekday mornings; pair it with Boboli Gardens behind.
