About

Bernardo Buontalenti built the fort for Grand Duke Ferdinando I in the 1590s, as much to watch the city as to defend it. It opens mainly for summer exhibitions. The walk up Costa San Giorgio is steep but pretty, and the ramparts give one of the widest views of Florence.

Best time to go: Open seasonally, usually in summer for exhibitions; check before walking up.
