About

Giotto began the tower in 1334 but only lived to see the first level; Andrea Pisano and Francesco Talenti finished it in the following decades. The climb has landings at each stage, so it is easier than the dome, and it is the best place to photograph the dome up close. The hexagonal relief panels on the base are copies; the originals are in the Opera del Duomo museum.

Best time to go: Late afternoon, when the light hits the dome and the queue is shorter than for the dome itself.
