About

Santa Maria del Fiore took well over a century to build, and its dome was an engineering puzzle nobody could solve until Filippo Brunelleschi designed a self-supporting double shell in the 1420s. Entry to the nave is free; the dome, bell tower, baptistery and museum are covered by the cathedral's passes, and the dome and bell tower climbs need booked time slots.

Best time to go: Book the dome climb for the first slot of the day, before the heat and the queues.
