About

The Bargello began in the thirteenth century as the city's first public palace and later served as police headquarters and prison. Today it holds Italy's finest collection of Renaissance sculpture, including Donatello's bronze David, Michelangelo's Bacchus and the competition panels Brunelleschi and Ghiberti made for the Baptistery doors.

Best time to go: Any weekday morning; it is one of the least crowded major museums.
