About

Orsanmichele started life as a grain hall before becoming a church in the fourteenth century. Each of the city's guilds paid for a statue of its patron saint in the outer niches, creating a showcase of early Renaissance sculpture. The statues outside are copies; many originals are displayed in the museum upstairs.

Best time to go: Walk around the outside any time; check the opening days for the upstairs museum.
