About

Built around 1300 for the city's governing council, the palace was remodelled by the Medici when Cosimo I moved in. Its highlight is the Hall of the Five Hundred, covered in Vasari's battle scenes. Tours of the secret passages and the climb up Arnolfo's tower are worth booking separately.

Best time to go: Climb the tower in the evening in summer, when it stays open late.
