About
Opened in 1816, the bridge takes its nickname from the halfpenny toll once charged to cross it. Its single graceful arch was cast in England, and it was the city's only pedestrian bridge over the Liffey for nearly two centuries, linking Temple Bar to the north side of the river.
Best time to go: Cross at dusk, when the lamps are lit and the Liffey reflects the quays.
