About
The castle was founded in the early thirteenth century on the site of a Viking settlement, and it remained the centre of British administration until 1922. The State Apartments include the grand St Patrick's Hall, while excavations below reveal the old town walls and a medieval tower.
Best time to go: Take the guided tour to see the medieval undercroft as well as the State Apartments.
