About

Built in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries on Roman foundations, Great St Martin is one of Cologne's twelve great Romanesque churches. Its square crossing tower, flanked by four slender turrets, is one of the defining shapes of the riverfront skyline. The church was badly damaged in the war and restored over several decades.

Best time to go: Visit on your way through the old town and step down to see the Roman remains beneath the church.
