About
Much smaller than the medinas of Fez or Marrakesh, the old medina largely dates from the late eighteenth century, when the town was rebuilt after an earthquake. Its lanes are workaday rather than showy, lined with stalls selling household goods and street food. On its seaward side, the Sqala fortification still carries a row of cannons pointed at the Atlantic.
Best time to go: Wander in the morning and finish on the Sqala bastion, where old cannons face the harbour.
