About

Po-i-Kalyan means 'at the foot of the great one', and the name refers to the Kalyan Minaret that rises above it. The complex brings together the Kalan Mosque, the minaret and the Mir-i-Arab Madrasah. The mosque and madrasah face each other across a square courtyard. The minaret itself was built in 1127 under the Qarakhanid ruler Mohammad Arslan Khan and is more than 45 metres tall.

Best time to go: Come at sunset, when the minaret and domes glow; return after dark to see the ensemble lit.
