About
The Ark of Bukhara is a vast fortress first built and occupied around the 5th century. Its present form began to take shape under the Shaybanids in the 16th century, though its standing buildings are from the last three centuries. Beyond its military role it was effectively a town, home to the courts that ruled the region. It served as a fortress until it fell to the Soviets in 1920, and it now houses museums.
Best time to go: Visit in the morning, and walk around the base of the walls afterwards to see their full scale.
