About

Built under the Yongle Emperor and completed in 1420, the palace was the seat of imperial power for nearly five centuries and was closed to ordinary people throughout. Its sequence of gates, marble terraces and golden-roofed halls leads from the great ceremonial courtyards to the more intimate living quarters and gardens of the inner court.

Best time to go: Book ahead with your passport, enter through the Meridian Gate early and leave by the north gate for Jingshan Park.
