About
The square spreads south from the Gate of Heavenly Peace, where Mao Zedong proclaimed the People's Republic in 1949 and where his portrait still hangs. It is framed by the Great Hall of the People, the National Museum of China and the Mao Mausoleum, with the Monument to the People's Heroes at its centre.
Best time to go: Bring your passport for the security checks, and come at dawn if you want to see the flag-raising ceremony.
