About

The hill was raised from earth dug for the palace moats, and it once served as a private imperial garden. The last Ming emperor took his own life here in 1644 as rebels entered the city, and today the pavilion on the summit gives an unforgettable panorama over the palace and the city beyond.

Best time to go: Climb to the summit pavilion after visiting the Forbidden City, ideally late in the afternoon.
