About

Built by the Jesuits in the early seventeenth century, the church was an early showpiece of Baroque architecture in the region, and Rubens contributed designs for its decoration. A fire in 1718 destroyed his ceiling paintings, but the rich facade, marble chapels and the Lady Chapel still show the ambition of the Counter-Reformation.

Best time to go: Visit when you are in the Hendrik Conscienceplein, one of the loveliest squares in the city.
