About
Het Steen is the surviving part of a castle that once guarded the river crossing, with parts dating to the thirteenth century and later Renaissance alterations. Over the years it served as a prison and a museum, and today it houses the city's visitor centre. The statue of the giant Lange Wapper stands at its gate.
Best time to go: Start a walk along the Scheldt quays here, and pop into the visitor centre inside.
