About
The city grew around a dam built on the Amstel in the thirteenth century, which gave Amsterdam its name. Today the square is framed by the Royal Palace, the Nieuwe Kerk and the National Monument, a white stone pillar honouring the victims of the Second World War.
Best time to go: Pass through early in the day to see the square before the crowds and street performers arrive.
