About

Laid out in the seventeenth century as housing for workers and immigrants, the Jordaan was once crowded and poor. Its small canals and gabled houses are now among the most sought after in the city, and the area is full of brown cafés, galleries and almshouse courtyards known as hofjes.

Best time to go: Wander on a Saturday morning, when the Noordermarkt fills with farmers' stalls.
