About
Founded in the late eleventh century, the abbey grew rich and powerful until its dissolution under Henry VIII in 1539. Its soaring nave wall and arches still stand within the Museum Gardens, and the site is used for open-air theatre in some summers.
Best time to go: Visit in the early evening light, when the ruined arches glow against the lawns.
