About
Laid out in the nineteenth century by the Yorkshire Philosophical Society, the gardens surround the Yorkshire Museum. Within them stand the ruins of St Mary's Abbey, part of the Roman fortress wall with its Multangular Tower, and the medieval Hospitium beside the river.
Best time to go: Bring a picnic on a sunny day and wander among the ruins by the river.
