Wrocław began on this island in the Oder, where a stronghold stood by the tenth century. Today Cathedral Island is a peaceful district of Gothic churches, clergy houses and cobbled lanes, reached by the Tumski Bridge, where couples leave padlocks on the railings.
Best time to go: Visit at dusk, when a lamplighter lights the gas street lamps by hand.
