About

The area became home to Jewish immigrants in the early twentieth century and later to Portuguese, Caribbean, Chinese and many other communities. Its Victorian houses have been turned into shops selling spices, cheese, fruit and second-hand clothing. The mix of food stalls and street art gives it a lively, independent character.

Best time to go: Visit on a Pedestrian Sunday in summer, when the streets close to cars and fill with music.
