About
Ano Poli climbs the hillside above the modern grid, a quarter of steep cobbled lanes, Ottoman-era houses with overhanging upper floors and small monasteries. Stretches of the Byzantine city walls run along its top, and terraces by the old gates look out across the rooftops to the gulf and Mount Olympus on clear days.
Best time to go: Take a taxi up, walk along the walls at sunset, then wander downhill through the lanes.
