About
A church has stood here since the fifth century over the traditional place of Saint Demetrius's martyrdom. Largely rebuilt after a devastating fire in 1917, the five-aisled basilica keeps rare Byzantine mosaics of the saint with the city's founders and children, while the crypt below reveals Roman bath remains.
Best time to go: Visit in the morning and go down to the crypt, where the saint is said to have been martyred.
