About
Built on the model of its namesake in Constantinople, this Hagia Sophia dates from the eighth century and served as the cathedral of the city. Its dome bears a magnificent mosaic of the Ascension, and the church is one of the Paleochristian and Byzantine monuments of Thessaloniki inscribed by UNESCO.
Best time to go: Step inside quietly between services and look up at the Ascension mosaic in the dome.
