About
Most of these small timber houses were built in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries for sailors, craftsmen and cannery workers. In the 1950s the area was threatened with demolition, but the city chose to preserve it. Today the cobbled streets, flower boxes and picket fences make it a delight to explore on foot.
Best time to go: Wander the lanes in the early evening, when the whitewashed houses glow in the low sun.
