About
Founded in 1395 by the first king of the Joseon dynasty, the palace was burned during the Japanese invasions of the 1590s and rebuilt on a grand scale in the 1860s. Its highlights are the Geunjeongjeon throne hall and the elegant Gyeonghoeru pavilion standing over a lotus pond, with Bugaksan mountain rising behind.
Best time to go: Arrive for the changing of the guard at Gwanghwamun, then explore the halls before the midday crowds.
