About
The Almohad caliph Yaqub al-Mansur began an immense mosque here in the 1190s, but work stopped at his death in 1199. The massive sandstone minaret, left at about 44 metres, still rises over a field of truncated columns that mark out the prayer hall. Along with the Koutoubia and the Giralda, it is one of the three great Almohad towers.
Best time to go: Visit in the late afternoon, when the stone turns golden, and combine it with the mausoleum opposite.
