About
Samuel de Champlain founded a trading post here in 1608, and the town became the capital of New France. The upper town sits within ramparts on the cliff, while the lower town clusters by the river. Narrow streets, stone houses, churches and squares give it a distinctly European character.
Best time to go: Wander the upper and lower towns on foot, using the funicular or the Breakneck Stairs to link them.
