About
Tamayo, born in Oaxaca, assembled these pieces for their beauty as much as their archaeology and gave them to his home city in the 1970s. Figures, vessels and masks from across ancient Mexico are displayed in rooms painted in strong colours, reflecting the painter's own eye rather than a strict chronology.
Best time to go: Take your time in the quiet coloured rooms, which make a restful break from the busy streets outside.
