About

Created from the 1990s on land once earmarked for a car park, the garden was championed by the artist Francisco Toledo and gathers plants from across the state's many climates. Columnar cacti, agaves and dye plants are arranged against the monastery walls, and guides explain how each species has been used for food, medicine and ritual.

Best time to go: Join one of the guided tours, which are the only way in, and bring a hat for the open, sunny beds.
