About
Built for Hatshepsut in the fifteenth century BC at Deir el-Bahari, the temple rises in three broad colonnaded terraces against a sheer amphitheatre of rock. Its clean lines seem remarkably modern. The reliefs record her divine birth and a trading expedition to the land of Punt, and statues of the queen as Osiris line the upper terrace.
Best time to go: Visit early in the morning, before the sun turns the cliffs and terraces into a furnace.
