About
Ramesses II built his memorial temple on the west bank to be remembered forever, and its reliefs celebrate his victory at the Battle of Kadesh. Today it is partly ruined, with Osiride pillars and the shattered fragments of a colossal granite statue of the king. That broken giant is said to have inspired Percy Bysshe Shelley's famous sonnet.
Best time to go: Visit in the late afternoon, when the low sun brings out the reliefs and the site is peaceful.
