About
Each figure stands about eighteen metres tall and has watched over the plain for some 3,400 years. After an earthquake cracked one of them in antiquity, it was said to sing at dawn, and Greek and Roman visitors came to hear it, linking it with the mythical hero Memnon. Archaeologists are still uncovering the temple that once stood behind them.
Best time to go: Stop here on your way into the west bank, ideally at sunrise when the statues are silhouetted.
