About

For around five centuries the kings of Egypt were laid to rest here, in tombs cut deep into the hills of the west bank. More than sixty have been found, their corridors covered with vivid scenes from the books of the underworld. The most famous is Tutankhamun's, discovered nearly intact by Howard Carter in 1922; the king's mummy still lies inside.

Best time to go: Cross to the west bank at dawn, and buy the extra tickets for tombs such as Seti I or Tutankhamun at the entrance.
