About
Designed by the Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen and carved in 1820 and 1821, the monument honours the Swiss Guards killed when revolutionaries stormed the Tuileries in Paris in 1792. Mark Twain called the mortally wounded lion one of the most mournful and moving pieces of stone in the world.
Best time to go: Come early or late in the day to see the lion in peace, reflected in the small pond.
