About
Settlement here goes back to the first centuries of the common era, and Lahore was a fortified city by the eleventh century. Its fortunes rose when the Mughals made it their capital, building Lahore Fort and new walls around the town. Six of the historic gates survive, and the lanes between them are still full of workshops, food stalls and centuries-old buildings.
Best time to go: Enter through Delhi Gate in the morning and walk west towards the fort, ideally with a local guide for the lanes.
