About

People have lived on this site for millennia, but the fort you see today was largely rebuilt in the seventeenth century, when Mughal power was at its height. Spread over more than 20 hectares, it holds 21 notable monuments, some dating back to the reign of Akbar. Together with the Shalimar Gardens it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its halls, courtyards and gateways reward an unhurried walk.

Best time to go: Allow at least two hours and start early, before the heat builds and the school groups arrive.
