About
Completed in 537 under Emperor Justinian, Hagia Sophia was for nearly a thousand years the largest cathedral in the world. After the Ottoman conquest of 1453 it became a mosque, gaining minarets and vast calligraphic roundels, while Byzantine mosaics of Christ and the emperors still glimmer from its galleries.
Best time to go: Go early in the morning, dress modestly, and avoid the midday Friday prayers.
