About
The walls were built by the Venetians in the sixteenth century and still ring the old town with bastions and gates. They withstood the Ottoman siege of Candia for more than twenty years before the city surrendered in 1669, and on the Martinengo Bastion lies the simple grave of the writer Nikos Kazantzakis.
Best time to go: Walk the ramparts towards the Martinengo Bastion late in the day to visit the grave of Kazantzakis.
