About
Set in a neoclassical mansion by the sea, the museum covers Byzantine, Venetian and Ottoman Crete, the island's uprisings and the Battle of Crete in 1941. Among its treasures are two paintings by El Greco, who was born on the island, and a room recreating the study of Nikos Kazantzakis.
Best time to go: Look for the two El Greco paintings and the reconstruction of Kazantzakis's study.
