About
Built in 1800, the Goddess of Mercy Temple on Pitt Street is the oldest Chinese temple in Penang. It was first set up for the worship of Mazu, the sea goddess. As Chinese migrants poured into the new town, it was rededicated to Guan Yin, the Bodhisattva of Mercy, by 1824. It also served as a neutral meeting place for the community, and it remains one of the busiest temples in George Town.
Best time to go: Come in the morning, when incense smoke fills the courtyard and worshippers are at their busiest.
